ps: Oz intro can be good for people travelling alone. I often recommend it to young females travelling alone or anyone who is apprehensive about traveling on their own, but to be honest, you dont really need it. You may feel restricted and like your on a school tour. Jumping into a hostel is the way forward. You will fly it on your own from there, not a bother.

Hey Sean

At the start of the phone call, tell them you overstayed your welcome in america and ask them if it will be a problem with being granted this visa. they WILL say no as its a different country. don't worry. If it was the other way around, America would instantly say no, but Australia doesn't work like that, luckily :-)
So with your work, you can easily do telesales etc.. which is very popular with backpackers here in Australia. Its a fun environment, where everyone is always hooking up, there is an abundance of lollipops and crisps etc to snack on throughout the day and to be honest its a doddle, as long as you reach the targets. Driving a fork lift can also be a nifty thing to have. As I said a lot of guys do labouring etc.. which is very good money.. definately more than telesales etc, but obviously manually and physically harder. depends on what your after really.

Hey Sean..

Well, I called Usit and applied over the phone. Within 48 hours they had approved my application and I went into them the next day and paid it off, got the tickets, insurance, the lot!.. a couple of months later I was here living the dream :-)
As far as I know you can pay it off in instalments so its not one big hit. I personally just wanted to get it out of the way so I could just focus on saving for my trip.
You will get a job no problem. The only people who seem to not have a job here, are people who are ultra fussy, over sensitive and down right lazy. I'm not being bias but Irish people are always hard workers and never have a problem holding down a job as compared to many other nationalities, I personally think we are honest and hard working. Overall Ozzie's are very easy to work for. Very laid back and easy going, especially compared to working for Irish and English bosses.
What kind of work do you do at home? What kind of work are you thinking of doing over here? Lots of the lads come over and work as tradesmen, labouring, working on the roads etc. This is very good money, especially if you work a few night shifts. If you plan on doing this you will need to get your green card here which is a health and safety course all tradies must have before stepping foot on site. Its a one day course and costs approx 100 bucks.
Hope this is helpful.

hey sean

i had a similar case with america. when applying for my ozzie visa i was stressin so much, but they simply said " thats america, and this is australia". it made no difference. america is gone ridiculous, but australia is far logical.
hope it works out for ya.

iv been travelling australia for the past 4 months now. its the best thing i have ever done. like when i was at home, im working as a psychiatric nurse through an agency. its great money and there is plenty of demand for nurses throughout the country. the agency i go through is aliance nursing agency.
apart from work, im completely living the dream and doing things i never expected to. i did a bungee jump last month, went sailing on the whitsundays a couple of months ago, and not pplanning the ultimate trip to see the big rock!
normal life at home, working, getting o work in the rain, etc... its all over rated. iv never lookedd back and im now trying to get my second year here. shouldnt be a problem with the line of work im in either. fingers crossed.
see ya

Travelling Australia is brilliant, but travelling New Zealand is even better. For anyone who is interested in outdoor adventure sports New Zealand is the place to go. Wrap up though, especially this time of year. The scenery is amazing. So many people visit Australia and unfortunately do not make that extra flight to NZ.. WHAT A SHAME!!!

When I moved to Sydney I wasn't sure where to work, what to do blah blah blah blah. More to the point I wasn't sure how long I'd be staying in Sydney for, so didn't want to get bogged down in a proper job, so decided to register with a recruiting agency in the city. That afternoon I got a call, following day I went to an interview and had a brief assessment thing... the next day I found myself sitting in the cushiest admin job, earning 25 bucks an hour.
I totally recommend going through an agency because

1 they find the work for you
2 its week to week so suits travellers etc
3 you get more money than you would working directly through a company

now iv recently moved to Melbourne. its very different here than sydney. not different good or different bad.. just different.
next stop is perth. from what i hear, i expect that to be very different lol

Hey Emma. yes I did hear that also ( Paddys Day / Church thing) and I still don't know if it is true or not. But what I hate is how in Sydney the Paddys day parade is on Sunday, not Monday.
That is that annoys me.

St Patricks Day is on March 17th as we all know. This falls on the Monday of Easter week, where we also have Good Friday, Holy Sat, Easter Sunday. So because of this aparently the Catholic Church have moved St Patricks Day this year to March 15th, being the previous Saturday... Has anyone else heard this? Any thoughts? I think its a joke. I'll still be wearin my Irish jersey and celebrating on march 17th.

My cousin proposed to her boyfriend on the last leap year and he said no!!! MORTO
Needless to say they are no longer together lol
Has anyone here done it? I'd be too scared.

February 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterNiamh

Tradition, Folklore and Superstition

A tradition was introduced many centuries ago to allow women to propose to men during a leap year. This privilege of proposing was restricted to leap day in some areas. Leap day was sometimes known as “Bachelors’ Day”. A man was expected to pay a penalty, such as a gown or money, if he refused a marriage offer from a woman.
The tradition’s origin stemmed from an old Irish tale referring to St Bridget striking a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men every four years. This old custom was probably made to balance the traditional roles of men and women in a similar way to how the leap day balances the calendar.
It was also considered to be unlucky for someone to be born on a leap day in Scotland and for couples to marry on a leap year, including on a leap day, in Greece.

A few of us from the hostel went into see Mardi Gras last year in Sydney and thought it was amazing. So much work and planning goes into it and they really do put on a great show. One word of advice, if you are meeting friends there, make sure you arrange to meet on the same side of the street, as once you walk up one side of the street, you cant cross over Oxford Street, so plan to meet youe mates on either the left or right hand side (if you get me).

Went to Good Vibrations last Saturday. Was a brilliant day.
Cypress Hill was awesome. Although I thought Kanye West would have been better, especially after us rushing all the way over to the main stage for it.
We dressed up in our fluro gear from head to toe, all 8 of us, thinking we wer great, to realise everyone else had the same idea te he he he ha he he.
In anyways, it was great. Can't wait for the next big one.

On January 2nd we arrived in the lovely Sydney all the way from South Carolina and we love it here. We have mostly stayed in youth hostels, but however have treated ourselves to a few nights in hotels here and there. Our only problem here is finding a house to rent. Its so DIFFICULT. We search the newspapers and online sites etc every day, but by the time we view it it is either gone, going or not at all as described in the add. Has anybody else had these problems?
Apart from that, thumbs up to Australia.
We hit New Zeland in June. looking forward to jumping out of a plane and all that

Hey Caroline
We stayed in YHA in Bondi and loved it. Its so nice there. We had plenty of space, lockers in our room and it was very clean etc, which is really important to me. I really think that a hostel is what you make of it (within reason-I have heard of some nasty places, especially as you move further up the east coast), but as I say, try it, if you hate it, move on, thats the joys of being a backpacker.

A young man walks up and sits down at the bar.

"What can I get you?" the bartender inquires.

"I want 6 shots of Jagermeister," responded the young man.

"6 shots?!? Are you celebrating something?"

"Yeah, my first blowjob."

"Well, in that case, let me give you a 7th on the house."

"No offence, sir. But if 6 shots won't get rid of the taste, nothing will
