Trekking or hiking depending on where you come from has to be the real adventure way to backpack. There is nothing like being one with nature and the world with you, a friend and a tent. Some of my most fondest memories of travel are the simple adventures that stay with you, the simple enjoyment and experiences of travel.

Walking can be hard work and hiking can be even harder, while many hardened trekkers get by with simple wooden walking poles, a more modern skiing style pole is not only a light alternative but also provides a much sounder support base and a far varied usefulness. Watch this vid on walking poles and have a think about them next time you have a hike planned.

Trekking the Inca trail can you imagine, I have not done it myself but is on my to do list, a hiking partner I will need as Emma would not on Gods earth come with me on such a hike. Having the right people with you when you are doing serious trekking is very important. Don’t always think you must share with you life partner as they may not share you lust for such adventure.

Trekking or hiking in my opinion is golden, but for someone else they would rather have their toe nails extracted while listening to a screaming child, each to their own. :)

Hiking in Thailand is an experience of heat and sweat but I still say do it! the entire region is special in so many ways, from endangered species to tropical rain forest and hidden temples.

It’s no good walking with no food and learning how to cook more than just noodles will make your backpacking adventures far more enjoyable, here is a good little vid on cooking on the trekking trail. Good food is not hard to make, and one pan cooking can make some truly spectacular dishes.

When Emma & I finally get on the trail again ourselves we are going to put together a new cooking series as we go, that is if we ever get out of Sydney and behind the wheel. :) 

When it comes to the Whitsunday Islands sailing is the only way to go, I can whole heartedly recommend the Anaconda II the same boat we did our trip in. The crew were really helpful the trip was amazing and I can not put into words what it is like sailing the Whitsunday.

Great Barrier reef there is no better way to see it than by boat, sailing the Whitsunday is going to be one of the biggest highlights to your backpacking adventure. Spend a week cruising around the amazing islands and soak up the local highlights and I don’t mean the plants.

Destination Airlie Beach an amazing backpacking town designed to empty your hard earned and give you a big hangover. Airlie Beach is great craic if you ask me, true you have to love bikini clad girls almost wearing it, you have to grind and bump your way through Magnums foam party.

Airlie Beach is the gateway to the Whitsunday islands, and for that the town has catered for the backpacker and tourist. A good selection of nightclubs are in the town but ti is in the water and on the islands where the magic of the Airlie Beach area really comes into her own.
